Marjorie Taylor Greene Turns on Trump and Tells GOP to End the Shutdown
The Georgia Republican said she does not believe that “vulnerable Americans should pay the price because of politics.”
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch supporter of the MAGA movement, has deepened her rift with President Donald Trump’s coalition by calling on Republicans to end the government shutdown.
The Georgia Republican said this week’s government shutdown “is not inevitable,” blaming the impasse on the Republican Party, which controls the White House and holds majorities in the House and Senate.
“This shutdown is a major political fight and a major drama right now, but it’s not inevitable,” she told InfoWars. “The Senate could resort to the nuclear option and circumvent the 60-vote rule. It could pass the resolution with a simple majority.”
The congresswoman pointed out that the Senate invoked this rule to expedite the confirmation process for Trump’s appointees last month. The House has already passed the funding bill that is paralyzing the Senate.
Like Greene, a majority of Americans blame the government shutdown on the Republican Party, according to a Washington Post poll released this week. This comes despite the Trump administration’s desperate attempts, including through potential Hatch Act violations, to blame Democrats for the impasse.
Republicans, including Trump, have falsely accused Democrats of being responsible for the government shutdown because they want to provide free health care to undocumented immigrants. In reality, federal law prevents undocumented immigrants from getting health insurance through Obamacare or receiving Obamacare benefits. They are also ineligible for Medicaid, Medicare, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Greene criticized her Republican colleagues for their political maneuvering while the government shutdown harms Americans, forcing Transportation Security Administration employees, air traffic controllers, and soldiers to continue working without pay. She also singled out the freezing of WIC benefits for struggling families and single mothers.
“These are single mothers who, as you know, have had a tough time over the last four years because of inflation, and the cost of living is very high right now,” the congresswoman said. “So I don’t think these vulnerable Americans should pay a heavy price because of the political situation in Washington. I think Republican senators need to quickly show courage and resolve.”
Greene is known for her outspoken criticism of Democrats, but during the MAGA 2.0″ campaign, she also used harsh language toward members of her own party. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast on Friday.
Her estrangement from Trump, 79, was exposed when it became clear that his administration would not declassify the so-called “Epstein files,” in which he is cited, as he had long promised.
Greene, 51, indicated on Friday’s episode that she still supports the president but is frustrated by his governing style, which has recently included sharing information, a plethora of AI-generated content and memes. She also broke with the White House over continued US military support for Israel, telling the New York Times that her response to the White House’s opposition was to say, “Fuck you!”
She maintained her composure during her interview with the far-right show “InfoWars.”
On Friday, she said, “I support President Trump. I supported him very strongly during his campaign, but I am frustrated that we are not passing laws to make his policies permanent.”
