Melania Has Been Secretly Working With Putin for Months
The first lady has been engaged in talks with the Russia leader over the war in Ukraine.
On Friday, First Lady Melania Trump issued a rare official announcement from the White House, revealing secret discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The First Lady added that, thanks to these efforts, eight children separated during the war in Ukraine have been reunited with their families, and that this work continues.
Trump emphasized that her dialogue with Putin has been ongoing since she sent him a letter in August. The President revealed for the first time this letter, which she sent to the Russian president via the Truth Social website and was hand-delivered to him during his summit with Trump in Alaska.
“Since President Putin received my letter last August, he has responded in writing, expressing his willingness to communicate directly with me and detailing the details regarding the Ukrainian children living in Russia,” the First Lady said Friday.
She added, “Since then, President Putin and I have maintained open communication regarding the well-being of these children.”
Trump added that over the past three months, the United States and Russia have held several secret meetings and exchanges. Trump stated, “We have agreed to work together in the interests of all parties involved in this war. My representatives have been working directly with President Putin’s team.”
The First Lady, who spends most of her time in New York, delivered her nearly five-minute speech from a podium at the White House before leaving the room without taking any questions.
Melania has been a discreet advisor to her husband on the war in Ukraine since he took office. The President has repeatedly stated that the First Lady was quick to point out to her husband that Putin was not negotiating with him in good faith while the war continued.
The negotiations between the First Lady and Russia to reunite the eight children with their families may be one of the few positive outcomes of the President’s high-profile meeting with Putin in Anchorage.
Trump said Friday that three of the eight children had been separated from their parents and moved to Russia due to fighting on the front lines, while the other five had been separated from their families across the border due to the conflict. The First Lady confirmed that the United States had verified the identity and whereabouts of each child. “This is an important initiative for me,” Trump said.
Ukraine announced it had verified that Russia had abducted approximately 20,000 children since the start of the war, but believes the actual number is much higher. Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab estimated the number at nearly 35,000 in March.
In her first letter, in August, the First Lady wrote to Putin that protecting the children would not only benefit Russia but also “serve humanity itself.”
During her speech on Friday, the First Lady stated that her current mission is to improve the flow of information about all child victims of war and facilitate their family reunification.
The First Lady stated that Russia has also agreed to reunite those separated from their families during the three-year war who have reached the age of 18. She added that efforts are underway and plans are already underway to reunite more children.
Trump concluded by saying, “I hope peace comes soon. It can start with our children.”
This statement follows the First Lady’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly with her husband in New York last month. During that meeting, she met directly with Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska, with whom she discussed the people affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
