The Trump administration is restructuring the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Criminal Investigations Unit to better target left-wing groups and donors, sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal in a report published Wednesday.

This report supports Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s threat on “The Charlie Kirk Show” to target opposition political groups, similar to how the Treasury Department tracked terrorists through their financial networks after the September 11, 2001, attacks. Bessent called Kirk’s assassination a “homegrown 9/11.”

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that a senior IRS official had already compiled a list of potential donors to investigate, including George Soros.

To facilitate this hunt, officials told the Wall Street Journal that allies of President Donald Trump would be assigned to the IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division to undermine the work of IRS lawyers in the investigations. Gary Shapley, an adviser to Bessent, said he would replace Guy Vecco, the longtime director of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and was currently preparing the target list, according to the newspaper.

The Wall Street Journal noted that this operation would bolster the Trump administration’s broader efforts to target left-wing organizations that the president believes are sowing chaos in Democratic cities.

Bessent appeared ready to launch such an operation on “The Charlie Kirk Show.”

Referring to the pro-Palestinian protests, the secretary said Tuesday: “Many of these organizations were funded by nonprofits, and that’s going to stop. We’re going to follow the money, as they always say.”
