Trump Gets Brutal Reality Check Ahead of Primetime Address
The president’s approval is underwater ahead of his address to the nation.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the nation from the White House Wednesday evening, but his approval rating has plummeted to a historic low as he prepares to tout his accomplishments.
The White House announced that Trump, 79, will reflect on his achievements of the past eleven months during his prime-time address. He will also outline his plans for the future.
However, the address comes as the president faces historically low approval ratings as he approaches the end of his first year in office, with a growing number of Americans rejecting his policies ahead of the midterm elections.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to lower prices, a promise that contributed to his re-election. But Americans remain dissatisfied with his handling of the economy.

According to a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, only 36% of Americans approve of his handling of the economy. This is his lowest approval rating ever recorded in this poll.
Meanwhile, his overall approval rating stands at just 38%, his lowest level since the beginning of his second term and his lowest approval rating since early 2018, shortly before the Democrats’ landslide victory in that year’s midterm elections.
The poll reveals that many Americans are struggling to make ends meet and are worried about their economic future and that of the country. More Americans said their financial situation had worsened over the past year. Inflation is the top concern for 45% of those surveyed.
The poll also indicates that 52% of Americans believe the United States is already in a recession.
This poll, released Wednesday, is the latest in a series of surveys showing the Republican president’s declining popularity among Americans. Meanwhile, Congress is struggling to manage the looming healthcare crisis, with health insurance premiums set to rise sharply for millions of Americans at the end of the year, following Republican leaders’ refusal to extend Obamacare subsidies in time.
A group of moderate Republican lawmakers defied their party’s leadership on Wednesday and joined Democrats to force a vote.
Faced with national discontent, Trump has touted the economy’s performance, despite evidence to the contrary.

He has repeatedly criticized the issue of the cost of living, calling it a “hoax” perpetrated by Democrats. However, some of his actions, including his planned speech Wednesday evening, his visit to Pennsylvania, and his scheduled trip to North Carolina later this week, suggest the White House is aware of his declining popularity.
However, during his visit to Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, last week, the president completely deviated from his prepared remarks at the event, which was initially supposed to focus on the cost of living and the economy.
Speaking from the White House on Wednesday is a more formal occasion, which might help him stick to his script, but only time will tell.
Convincing Americans that he is still the right person for the job, with unemployment at 4.6%, its highest level since 2021, and inflation slightly higher than its annual rate a year ago, presents a completely different challenge.
