Musk shreds Trump’s tax bill as ‘DEBT SLAVERY,’ vows to unseat Republicans who back it
Musk, who walked back some criticism of Trump after blow-up, reignited feud
While he may have dialed down his public clashes with President Donald Trump, Elon Musk has not relented in his campaign to derail Trump’s hallmark tax-and-spending bill.
On Monday, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO launched a fresh barrage of criticism against the sweeping legislation that Trump is urging Republicans to fast-track through Congress, branding it a “DEBT SLAVERY bill” and directly calling out its Republican supporters.
Musk—who reportedly spent nearly $290 million supporting Trump and other GOP candidates during the 2024 election cycle—did not hold back. He called for the creation of a “new political party” and pledged to target any self-proclaimed fiscal conservatives who support the bill in their upcoming primaries.
“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!” Musk posted on X, his social media platform.
“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he added.
Musk’s fiery comments came as the Senate entered a critical phase of voting on dozens of amendments to the bill during the reconciliation process—a legislative maneuver that would allow Republicans to pass the bill without Democratic votes.
If approved by the Senate, the amended bill must return to the House for a final vote before heading to President Trump’s desk for signature.
Musk’s threats may have more political weight in the House than in the Senate. House members face re-election every two years, making them more vulnerable to well-funded primary challenges. In contrast, senators serve six-year terms and face staggered elections, making them less susceptible to immediate pressure.
House races are also confined to individual districts, where a surge in campaign spending can significantly alter the outcome. This makes Musk’s vow to fund primary challengers particularly impactful in the lower chamber.
Musk has repeatedly criticized the legislation, particularly for provisions that raise the debt ceiling by trillions of dollars, eliminate clean energy incentives, and introduce new tax breaks for coal producers. These changes directly affect Tesla’s energy division, which markets solar panels and clean tech.
The Senate version of the bill would fully eliminate federal subsidies for wind and solar projects installed after 2027—a direct blow to Musk’s solar ventures.
He intensified his criticism Monday afternoon, declaring, “It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS, that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!!”
“Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” Musk continued.
Musk also targeted two House Republicans—Andy Harris of Maryland and Chip Roy of Texas—both members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, for supporting or failing to oppose the bill.
“How can you call yourself the Freedom Caucus if you vote for a DEBT SLAVERY bill with the biggest debt ceiling increase in history?” Musk wrote, tagging both lawmakers directly.
Harris, who chairs the Freedom Caucus, voted “present” on the bill when it passed the House in May. At the time, he explained his procedural vote was intended to “move the bill along in the process for the President,” while acknowledging that significant work remained in cutting the deficit and curbing waste, fraud, and abuse—particularly in the Medicaid program.
